WASH YOUR HANDS! USE SANITIZERS! COUGH IN YOUR SLEEVE! With H1N1 in the news so much these days, we are finishing up our book on a life-threatening Spiritual virus. You may be familiar with the medical condition referred to as “IBS” or Irritable Bowel Syndrome, but have probably never heard of Irritable Baptist Syndrome. Perhaps you have, but did not know what to call it. Irritable Baptist Syndrome is a spiritual virus that drains believers of their joy and love for Christ and others. Rather than grow in grace, these believers become increasingly legalistic, proud and judgmental. Once infected, IBS sufferers become increasingly unpleasant to be around. The swelling of pride, the poor vision, and the venom that can spew out of an infected persons mouth results in an affliction that stinks, and stinks bad! This virus is named for the denomination in which it was first identified, but affects the evangelical church at large. We debated whether to label it “Irritable Believers Syndrome”, but felt Baptist had a better ring to it. Say it out loud three times and see if you don’t agree. This book attempts to deal with a very real spiritual issue in a way that it non-threatening and engaging – and hopefully evokes a smile or two.
Playing off of the medical symptoms associated with the intestinal disorder, the book describes the symptoms most commonly associated with IBS, but also provides a suggested treatment plan as well. Yes – hope is alive and well! Our goal is to balance the bad news with a positive message of hope. The first half will describe the condition, and its causes and symptoms, while the second half of the book focuses on treatment and prevention. Education is the best weapon against this form of IBS.
